Search suspended for missing workers in Baltimore bridge collapse

The search grew more desperate and urgent with every passing minute. Crews scoured a remarkable wreckage site of twisted metal and debris. After hours on the water with no signs of life, authorities confirmed the worst-case scenario. “At this point, we do not believe that we’re going to find any of these individuals still alive.”

The terrifying incident was caught on camera. A massive cargo ship, the DI, lost power, and all of the lights went out. The crew knew something was terribly wrong and sent out a Mayday call. “All traffic on the Key Bridge, there’s a ship approaching, it just lost its steering.”

At this point, the out-of-control ship was moving at about eight knots or 15 km per hour. A plume of smoke could be seen in the moments just before it collided with the bridge’s support structure. At least eight people were on the bridge, construction workers doing routine maintenance. Only two were rescued; the other six are now presumed dead. “There would have been more drivers had the ship’s crew not called for help, giving police time to close the bridge. These people are heroes; they saved lives last night.”

The federal government will pay to rebuild the bridge and get the port reopened as quickly as possible. “Everything so far indicates that this was a terrible accident. At this time, we have no other reason to believe there’s any intentional act here.”

While authorities try to ease the public’s concerns, the path ahead will be difficult. Baltimore’s mayor says his city can handle it. “Baltimore is a strong, resilient city. We can’t be broken; we will be able to rebuild. But right now, our focus is on the preservation of life, and that’s our only focus right now.”

As of tomorrow, emergency crews will shift their focus to the ship. Investigators are expected to board the ship and recover its recording devices, which may provide more insight for the investigation. Expect more conversations about removing some of the wreckage as they plan the recovery and rebuilding effort.
