Just don’t ever think that something like that could happen. I mean, it’s unreal. You wake up and you hear the bridge collapse, and you’re thinking how, and you’d think they’d have things to stop that from happening. The shift has gone from rescue to recovery. Six people are presumed dead after the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed in Baltimore. Crews are back in the water this morning as officials say it will likely take weeks or even months to clear the wreckage.
Fox 43 Morning News at 7 starts right now. We continue to follow the latest from Baltimore this morning where crews are now back in the water to begin that recovery process. Officials say that six missing construction workers are presumed dead. Fox 43’s Sean Striker joins us in Baltimore this morning. Sean, what is the scene like there as the sun starts to come up?
Well, as we know, those search and recovery efforts are going to be really affected by the weather today. It was raining on and off. Fortunately, right now, the rain has seemed to stop, at least for now. It is cloudy, there is overcast, but you can still see boats and activity out on the water by the ship, by the Francis Scott Key Bridge.
We saw the activity begin really just before 6 a.m. this morning with the flashing lights, the emergency lights. We’re about 5 miles south of the Key Bridge on the Patapsco River. One thing that you can’t really see that is kind of hard to tell is the sheer size of the bridge.
This was a massive bridge and a huge ship. Remember that ship nearly 1,000 ft long, the bridge almost a mile and a half across. So, it is a huge undertaking to search all of that wreckage. You can see as we zoom in live this morning, the debris, the bridge still strewn, still spread across the bow of that ship, still sticking out of the water, and obviously nearly 50 ft deep if not a little more in the channel there.
So, they have a lot to search, and they want to do so safely. Right now, the weather is calm, as we said, the rain has stopped, but the wind has also died down, and the water at least appears to be calm, hopefully making their search and recovery efforts just a little bit easier this morning here in Baltimore.
